Telling Stories

Content Objectives

Children will:

• Learn about the concept of telling stories.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about the parts of a story.
• Explore and apply the concept of why we tell stories.

Children will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of telling stories.
• Orally use words that describe the parts of a story.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about what we learn from stories.
• Use key concept words [characters, narrator, setting, plot, story].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that children are going to learn about:
• The parts of a story.
• How to tell the parts of a story.
• What we can learn from stories.
• How to tell a story.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask children: What are the people in the photo doing? (telling a story). Who is telling the story? (the teacher).
• Ask children: What kinds of stories do you like to tell? (answers will vary).
• Say: All stories have certain parts. All stories have a beginning and an end. Can you think of other parts that all stories have? (characters, a place, a time).

Guided Practice

• Guide children through the next three slides, showing them the different parts of a story. Always have the children give an example from a story they like or a story they've read recently in class.

Apply

• Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask children to talk about examples of the different kinds of stories and help the children learn more about the kinds of stories they are interested in. After the second game, have them tell a story to a partner or group using a setting and characters from the game.

Close

• Ask children: What kind of story do you like best? Explain.
• Summarize for children that there are many different kinds of stories we can tell. We can tell stories we have heard from our families. We can tell stories about things that have happened to us. We can tell stories about things we learn about. We can tell stories about things we imagine. Encourage children to think about stories that they'd like to tell.
