Forests and Great Trees

Content Objectives

Students will:

• Learn about the concept of forests and trees.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about why trees and forests are important to the Earth's environment.
• Explore and apply the concept of how people and animals need trees and forests to survive.

• Orally use words that describe how trees and forests are important to the Earth's environment.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about preserving trees and forests.
• Use key concept words [trees, park, forest, protect, preserve].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words. • Explain that students are going to learn about trees and forests:
• How trees and forests affect the Earth's environment.
• What trees provide for animals and humans.
• Where trees can be found.
• Why it is so important to protect and preserve the Earth's forests.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What is an environment? (Everything that surrounds a person, animal, or plant). What different things make up the Earth's environment? (The air, water, soil).
• Ask students: Why are the things that make up the Earth's environment so important to us? (They make it possible for us to live on Earth).
• Say: The Earth is different from other planets because its environment allows humans and animals to live here. Could we live on another planet? Why or why not? (We could not because the environments on other planets would not provide the things we need to survive).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next two slides, showing them that trees are an important part of the Earth's environment because they provide many things that allow us to live. Always have students describe different things that trees provide and how we benefit from them.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students to talk about different animals that live in trees. After the second game, have them discuss different items humans use that come from trees. After the third game, have students discuss different types of trees and the different types of forests where they can be found.

Close

• Ask students: What do trees provide for humans? Explain why we need to protect and preserve the Earth's trees.
• Summarize for students that it is important to protect and preserve the Earth's trees since they give us many things like oxygen and paper. Also, many animals live in trees and forests. Encourage them to think about how they can help to save the trees and forests.
