In the early 1900s women in California could be elected to school boards but they could not vote. Caroline Maria Severance was one of the women who fought for suffrage in California. In 1911, California became the sixth state to give women the right to vote. At the age of 91, Severance became the first woman in California to register to vote. Why are suffrage movements important?
