Content Objectives

Children will:

• Learn about performing.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about performers and performances.
• Explore and apply the concept of identifying performers and forming a band.

Language Objectives

Children will:

• Be able to discuss the concept of performance.
• Orally use words that name various types of performances and performers.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about creating a performance of their own.
• Use key concept words [performer, performance, singer, dancer, actor, chorus, band, audience].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that children are going to learn about performing:
• What does it mean to perform?
• What is an audience?
• What are the differences between a chorus and a band?
• Where can you see a performance?

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask children: What are some types of performances? (rock concerts, ballets, musicals, etc.)
• Ask students: What are some examples of performers? (singers, dancers, musicians, etc.)
• Say: Performances are shows that people go to. There are many different kinds of performers. One type of performer is a musician. What are some instruments that musicians play? (guitars, trumpets, drums, etc.)

Guided Practice

• Guide children through the next three slides showing them pictures of different types of performances. Always have the children identify the type of performer or performance.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask children if they have ever seen or participated in a performance. After the second game, encourage them to share experiences they have had performing or witnessing performances.

Close

• Ask children: Name all the different types of performances and performers you can think of and talk about what each one is like.
• Say: Performances can be a lot of fun! Many people go with their friends or family to see performances. What type of performer would you like to be? Why?
