Content Objectives

Children will:

• Learn about the concept of making things.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about arts and crafts.
• Explore and apply the concept of reality vs. imagination.

Language Objectives

Children will:

• Be able to explain how to make arts and crafts.
• Orally use words about types of arts and crafts and the things that are used to make them.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about the concept of imagination.
• Use key concept words [art, drawing, painting, project, creative, imagination].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that children are going to learn about making things:
• How to make things.
• The difference between imagination and reality.
• How team spirit helps a team perform better.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask children: Why do we make things? (for fun, for a school project, etc.)
• Ask children: What are some things we can make? (drawings, paintings, sculptures, etc.)
• Say: Art is a fun and creative way of expressing your ideas, thoughts, and opinions. What are some things we use to make arts and crafts? (crayons, scissors, glue, etc.)

Guided Practice

• Guide children through various arts and crafts they could make, asking them what materials they would need to make the item. Always have the children identify the name of the arts and crafts item.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask children about their personal experiences with making arts and crafts. After the second game, encourage them to share a story about their favorite arts and crafts product and how they made it.

Close

• Ask children: Look around the classroom. Could you make anything with the things that are in the room right now? What could you make?
• Say: One of the great things about art is that there is never a wrong or right answer. Art means different things to different people. Think about what you would like to say using art.
