Content Objectives

Students will:

• Learn about the concept of fantastic foods.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about different types of fantastic foods.
• Explore and apply the concept of fantastic foods and where they come from.

Language Objectives

Students will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of fantastic foods.
• Orally use words that describe different types of foods and how they grow.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about the process of growing fantastic foods.
• Use key concept words [vegetables, fruits, taste, roots, fertilizer, grow, farm; reap, fantastic, texture].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about:
• Fantastic Foods.
• Examples of foods that taste good and are good for you.
• How fruits and vegetables are grown.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What kinds of foods do you see in this picture? (bananas, apples, milk, eggs, toast, rolls, a pineapple, apples, pears, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, orange, radish).
• Ask students: What are some examples of foods that are good• tasting and good for you? (fruits and vegetables).
• Say: In this activity, we're going to learn about different examples of fantastic foods. What are your favorite foods? (answers will vary).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next five slides, showing them examples of fantastic foods (fruits and vegetables) and how they are grown. Always have the students describe whether or not they like the food and why.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students to talk about what they think might be challenging about growing fruits and vegetables. After the second game, have them discuss the textures of their favorite foods.

Close

• Ask students: What are your favorite fantastic foods?
• Summarize for students that there are many foods we can eat that are good• tasting and healthy. Encourage them to think about which foods are nutritious and which are not.
