• Students will write letters nominating mentors in their lives for a "Mentor of the Year" contest.

Suggested Activities

• Teachers can be mentors too. Have students review what a mentor does on the Web page. Ask students to interview other students as well as teachers in order to learn more information about teachers they have had who have made a difference in their lives. Have students make a Teacher Hall of Fame for your school to show others how teachers have acted as mentors.

Level Activities

Approaching select and read What Is Peer Mentoring? In their own words, have students tell the class what a peer mentoring program is and why it is useful.
On level explore the site. Direct them towards What Does It Take To Start a Mentoring Program? Ask students to write a letter to their principal explaining why they think a peer mentoring program would be useful for their school. Students can refer to information on the Web site in their letter.
Beyond read the information on peer mentoring, then draft a comprehensive plan to develop a peer mentoring program in your school or community. Make sure students think about such aspects as recruiting mentors, rules, challenges, and rewards.
