Growing Up

Content Objectives

Children will:

• Learn about the concept of growing up.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about what happens as we grow up.
• Explore and apply the concept of growing up.

Language Objectives

Children will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of growing up.
• Orally use words that describe what happens when we grow up.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about different aspects of growing up.
• Use key concept words [little, learning, run, ride, grow up, change].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that children are going to learn about growing up:
• Getting bigger.
• Learning to do new things as you grow up.
• How people change as they grow up.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask children: What do you see in this picture? (children, friends, etc.)
• Ask children: What kind of things can you do with your friends? (answers will vary).
• Say: As you grow up, you are learning to do many things. What things have you learned to do? (answers will vary).

Guided Practice

• Guide children through the next two slides, showing them that the pictures show some of the things that they will be able to do as they grow up. Always have the children describe what they hope to learn to do when they grow up.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask children to talk about what kinds of things they can do now that they could not do as babies. After the second game, have them discuss how baby animals look different from grown• up animals.

• Ask children: What kinds of things do you want to do when you grow up?
• Say: You are growing up fast. Every day you grow and learn new things. As we learn about growing up, think about the ways that you change as you grow.
