Content Objectives

Children will:

• Learn about the concept of helping.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about how people help.
• Explore and apply the concepts of responsibility and cooperation.

Language Objectives

Children will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of helping.
• Orally use words that describe how people help.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about responsibility and cooperation.
• Use key concept words [help, helping hand; responsibility, cooperation].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that children are going to learn about helping:
• How people help.
• Why people help.
• What is responsibility.
• What is cooperation.
• Why do people cooperate.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask children: What are the people in the photo doing? (helping an elderly person to walk). Why is it a good idea to help? (to get things done, etc).
• Ask children: How do you help at home? (washing dishes, walking the dog, cleaning the bathroom, etc).
• Say: We all need help sometimes. Help means to do something for someone else. Sometimes we need help with our homework or we need someone to help us get something that is on a shelf. When have you needed help? (answers will vary ).

Guided Practice

• Guide children through the next three slides, showing them different ways that people cooperate and share responsibilities. Always have the children describe how people are helping and the benefit of helping.

Apply

• Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask children to talk about what happens if you don't cooperate. After the second game, have them discuss their parents' responsibilities.

Close

• Ask children: What kinds of differences does helping out make?
• Say: It is important for us to help each other. When we help each other, we are cooperating with each other. If we don't cooperate, then things won't improve. Once we all share responsibilities, things become much easier. By helping each other, we are making the world a better place. Think about how you can make a difference.
