• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about Native Americans.
• Use key concept words [tribe, teepee, loincloth, buffalo, feathers; Native American, Great Plains Indians].

Explain
• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.• Explain that students are going to learn about the Great Plains Indians:
• What is a Native American.
• What are the different tribes.
• Who are the Great Plains Indians.
• How the Native Americans lived.
Model
• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do you see in this photo? (A Native American). What is the man wearing in the photo? (feathers on head, blue outfit, holding a rod with feathers, blue shoes, blue arm bands, etc).• Ask students: What is he doing in the photo? (dancing).
• Say: A Native American is a member of the people, who have lived in North and South America since long before European settlers arrived. Some Native Americans from the past had special traditional dress such as feather headdresses. When do you wear a special outfit? (answers will vary).
Guided Practice
• Guide students through the next three slides, showing them aspects Native American culture. Always have the students describe the importance of these things to the Native Americans.Apply
• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.• After the first game, ask students to discuss how to build a tepee. After the second game, have them describe their favorite article of Native American dress.

• Ask students: Do you think Native Americans still live in tepees today? Explain.• Summarize for students that Native Americans still face some difficulties today as they try to preserve their heritage. There are battles over land between the Native Americans and the States. Encourage them to think about why there would be battles over land between the Native Americans and the States.
