• Students will use the Internet to research what a concrete poem is and how one is written.
• Students will read other children's concrete poems.
• Students will read directions for writing their own concrete poem.
• Students will write a concrete poem.
Description
The site is a professionally developed site by Byron Community School. It gives step• by• step instructions on how to construct a concrete poem, and provides examples of concrete poems written by children in the school.
Suggested Activities
• Students can bind their poems together to make a book called "Concrete Poems." Then they can take turns reading their poems to the class.
• Students can click on More of Our Poetry to read more examples of children's poetry. Have them rate each poem according to the following scale, and explain their rating to the class:
1 - I don't understand.
2 - Needs more work.
3 - Okay.
4 - Very nice.
5 - I wish that I had written it.
Level Activities
• Have students connect to http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/aero/wright/teachers/wfomanual/langarts/poem.html. They should explore this site in order to compose another concrete poem that has:
one rhyming couplet.
two rhyming couplets.
four rhyming couplets.
