Wolves

Content Objectives

Students will:

• Learn about wolves.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about wolves, their habits and characteristics, and their endangerment.
• Explore and apply understanding of wolves, wolf behavior, and the endangerment of the species.

Language Objectives

Students will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of wolf behavior and characteristics.
• Orally use words that identify various wolf traits and the endangerment of wolves.
• Extend oral vocabulary by discussing the way wolves live and how human beings can help prevent wolf extinction.
• Use key concept words [wild, hunt, pack, howl, endangered].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about wolves:
• That wolves are carnivores and hunters.
• That wolves live in packs.
• That wolves howl to communicate.
• That wolves are endangered.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What kind of animal is this? (a wolf).
• Ask students: What do you know about wolves? (they are hunters, they eat meat, they live in the woods, they howl, and so forth).
• Say: Wolves are found almost everywhere in the world. They are related to dogs but they are wild animals – this means they should not be kept as pets. What would you do if you saw a wolf? (answers will vary).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next three slides, showing them that wolves live and hunt in groups called packs, and that wolves are endangered. Always have the students discuss other wild animals.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. • After the first game, ask students to discuss why they think wolves live in packs. After the second game, have them discuss why they think wolves are an endangered species.

Close

• Ask students: How do you think human beings can help to save the wolves?
• Summarize for students that wolves are related to dogs. Wolves are wild animals that live in packs, howl, and eat meat. Encourage them to think about other endangered species.
