3rd Grade Research and Inquiry Resources

Objectives

• Students will read a traditional fable on a dynamic, animated Web site.
• Students will read a modern version of the same fable and compare it with the traditional version.

Description

These illustrated fables were created in response to an assignment given by Professor Copper Giloth at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. It contains links to almost forty animated fables, told in both traditional and modern versions.

Suggested Activities

• Have students team up with a partner to act out the events in their chosen fable. They don't have to remember all the words that were said by characters, but they should act out the fable's main events with some accuracy.

Level Activities

• Have students click on http://www.mcwdn.org/fables/fabindex.html to read another fable. When they are done reading, ask them to:
Approaching retell the story out loud to a classmate.
On level create a book that illustrates the text of the fable on the website.
Beyond show how the animals in fables take on human characteristics by making a collage of different animals and labeling some of the human traits that they might represent.
