Getting Along

Objectives

• Students will use the Internet to do research and inquiry on getting along with friends.
• Students will complete a worksheet to determine the best way to discuss a problem with a friend or family member.
• Students will reflect on why this method of speaking about a problem is better than making an accusation.
• Students will complete an additional activity.

Description

This PBS Web site is devoted to helping kids deal with every day life problems. It includes informative articles, games and activities, quizzes and poles, and the opportunity for kids to share their own stories. The site is organized into five different sections: Friends, Family, School, Body, and Emotions.

Suggested Activities

• Have students scroll further down the Web page to read the tips: "Stay cool and talk calmly," "Avoid the blame game," "Don't get trapped in another fight," "Try writing it down," and "Talk to a counselor." Divide students into groups and have them role play situations in which they can use these tips.

Level Activities

• Have students explore http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/conflict/intromovie.html. Have them progress through the presentation by clicking on the forward arrow when it is presented. The site presents several conflicts and asks students to decide what they would do in those situations. When students finish navigating through the site, ask them to:
draw three pictures that illustrate one of the scenarios. The pictures should correspond to the three different choices: the loud choice, the soft choice, and the think and share choice.
discuss a time they used the "think and share" choice. Did talking about the problem help solve it?
come up with a sample scenario of their own and describe the loud, soft, and think and share choices that correspond to their scenario.
