Objectives
Students will use the Internet to do research and inquiry about measurement.
Students will learn about different remarkable measurements of speed and size in the animal kingdom.
Students will take notes on what they have learned.
Students will make posters that illustrate the relative sizes and speeds of different animals.
Description
Factmonster.com is an educational web site for students featuring information and activities in content areas such as science, math, social studies, and sports.
Suggested Activities
Have students measure their own heights in the classroom. Then, have them click on the names of the large animals featured on the site. Have them describe one of the animal's heights in terms of their own, i.e., "a blue whale is as big as X students my size." Have them draw pictures to graphically represent these comparisons.
Level Activities
Have students connect to oncampus.richmond.edu/academics/education/projects/webunits/measurement/. Then, have them:
read about the different units of measurement by clicking on Length, Mass, Temperature, Time, and Volume.
have them complete the activities for each type of measurement by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.
have students use the information they have learned to create a quiz game about units of measurement.
