3rd Grade Research and Inquiry Resources

Objectives

Students will use the Internet to do research and inquiry about tools.
Students will learn about tools used by the pioneers to plant and harvest crops.
Students will see photos and drawings of tools used by pioneers.
Students will imagine themselves as pioneer farmers and will write journal entries about planting and harvesting crops. 
 

Brief Description of the Internet site:

Saskschools.ca hosts several educational web pages for students. This particular web page is about pioneer farmers and the tools they used to plant and harvest their crops.

 

Additional Suggested Activities:

At the bottom of the page, have students click on Back (survival). Have them read about the different tools and tactics used by settlers to survive harsh conditions in a strange new land. Have them compare the lives of these pioneers to what they know about the first European settlers to come to America, the Pilgrims.

 

Leveled Activities:

Have students connect to www.worldalmanacforkids.com/WAKI-ViewArticle.aspx. Then, have them:

read about the invention of the cotton gin and discuss what the invention did.
Have them write a short paragraph about why the cotton gin was so important in American history.
Have students design their own farming inventions. Have them draw a picture of the invention and write about what problem the invention will solve for farmers.
