North and South Pole

Content Objectives

Students will:

• Learn about the concept of the North and South Pole.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about the North and South Pole.
• Explore and apply the concept of the North and South Pole and where the two are located.

Language Objectives

Students will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of the North and South Pole.
• Orally use words that describe what the North and South Poles are and where they are located.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about terms that describe the North and South Pole.
• Use key concept words [glacier, polar bears, penguins, iceberg, Northern Lights, Equator; Arctic, polar, Tundra, vacant, insulate, endure, North Pole, South Pole].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about:
• What the North and South Poles are.
• Where the North and South Poles are located.
• What are the characteristics of the North and South Poles.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do you see here? (mountains, snow, ice, water).
• Ask students: Where do you think this photo could have been taken? (Alaska, the North or South Pole, Antartica).
• Say: In this activity, we're going to learn about the North and South Pole. What must the weather be like in the North and South Pole? (cold, snowy, windy).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next two slides, showing them what the North and South Pole is like, where it is located and what lives there. Always have the students compare and contrast the North and South Pole.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students to talk about why they think they would only see certain things at the North and South Pole. After the second game, have them discuss things that people would need to have and wear in order to survive in the North and South Pole.

Close

• Ask students: Would you like to go to the North and South Poles? Why or why not?
• Summarize for students that the North and South poles are very cold. Encourage them to think about what life would be like at the North and South Poles.
