Objectives

• Students will use the Internet to do research and inquiry on careers.
• Students will assess their interests and find jobs that might be a good fit.
• Students will choose one job that they like and answer questions about it.

Description

This Web site was created and maintained by the New York State Department of Labor. The site was developed to help people in New York State find more information about different careers and school programs.

Suggested Activities

• Have students share the kinds of jobs that interest them. Make a bar graph that shows all of the jobs students chose. Hold a career day in the classroom where students share more information about the most popular or interesting jobs. Invite people from the community to come in and talk to the class about their jobs and how they decided what careers they wanted.

Level Activities

• Have students connect to http://www.bls.gov/k12/index.htm. Then have students:
choose the field that interests them and click on it to find out more about careers in that area. Have students choose one type of job and write a few sentences describing the job and why it appeals to them.
use the links at the bottom of their favorite career Web page to find out more about that career. Students can research a famous person who had the chosen career at some point and put together a brief biography of that person's life, including his or her career.
click on BLS Home Page at the bottom of the Web page. Students can scroll down and find their state under the map to get detailed employment information from their state. If they click the At a Glance area for their state, they will see a chart detailing data for several areas of employment. Students can use this information to see how their state compares with other states in terms of employment. You might encourage them to research several states and present an argument for why one state would be better to work in than another.
