Where Animals Live

Content Objectives

Children will:

• Learn about the concept of where animals live.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about animal habitats.
• Explore and apply the concept of animal habitats.

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of animal habitats.
• Orally use words that describe where different animals live.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about different animal habitats.
• Use key concept words [into, many, live, out, habitat, survive, home].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that children are going to learn about animal habitats:
• Some of the different places where animals live.
• What animals need to survive.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask children: What do you see in this picture? (a family's home).
• Ask children: Where do you and your family live? (answers may vary: 'close to school', 'far away', 'in a neighborhood', street name, 'in a house', etc.)
• Say: People live in houses, but many animals do not. Where do animals live? (in the forest, zoo, outside, etc.)

Guided Practice

• Guide children through the next three slides, showing them that the pictures show some of the different places where animals live. Always have the children describe whether they would like to live in those places.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask children to talk about what kinds of things animals need to survive. After the second game, have them discuss different kinds of animals and where they live.

Close

• Ask children: What kind of animal habitats have you seen? (answers will vary).
• Say: There are many different kinds of places where animals can live. As we learn about animal habitats, let's think about why some animals need to live in different places than other animals.
