Energy Sources

Content Objectives

Students will:

• Learn about energy sources.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about the significance of energy.

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about energy sources:
• What is energy.
• What is energy used for.
• What are energy sources.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do you see in this photo? (lamp). How is light coming through the lamp? (light bulb).
• Ask students: How many lamps are there in the classroom? (answers will vary).
• Say: Energy is anything that can be turned into power or action. Some forms of energy are light, and heat. We use energy when we turn on a heater or turn off a light switch. Where do you think all of our energy comes from? (answers will vary).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next three slides, showing them the different energy sources. Always have the students describe how we use these energy sources.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students to talk about which of the energy sources is probably the most expensive. After the second game, have them discuss other ways of staying warm.

Close

• Ask students: Can we survive without these energy sources? Explain.
• Summarize for students that many parts of the world aren't as dependent upon these energy sources. But other countries are because they are more developed, thus they have more use for energy. During the pre• historic era, people didn't know about oil. They used the sun as a source of light and rubbed sticks together to make fire. Encourage them to think about what life was like before these energy sources.
