Objectives

• Students will read an introduction to haiku and then a haiku called "Frog And Pond."
• Students will read about syllables.
• Students will read about how to write a haiku and will ask the teacher any necessary questions. • Students will write a haiku.

Suggested Activities

• Ask for volunteers to write their haikus on the board and then have students connect to http://www.kidzone.ws/poetry/haiku.htm and click on Worksheet #1, which teaches about use of syllables in a haiku and how to analyze a haiku.

Level Activities

• Have students connect to http://www.haikupoetshut.com/haigandx2.html. Have them scroll down and click on the square labeled Haiga in the table. Haiga is haiku poetry paired with art. Ask students to choose one haiga to read. Ask: Do you like to read haikus better when they are illustrated or when they are not? Next, have students:
draw a picture to go with the haiku they wrote for the earlier assignment.
write a new haiku and draw a picture to go with it.
read several haiga from the Web site and then write new haikus to go along with the illustrations of the haiga they read.
