Animal Rescue

Content Objectives

Children will:

• Learn about the concept of animal rescue.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about how people rescue animals.
• Explore and apply the concept of why people rescue animals.

Children will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of animal rescue.
• Orally use words that describe how people rescue animals.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about why people rescue animals.
• Use key concept words [dogs, cats, birds, seals, whales, save, lost].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that children are going to learn about animal rescue:
• Why an animal might need to be rescued.
• What people can do to help animals.
• What are some ways that people help animals.
• Why people should help animals.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask children: What are the people in the photo doing? (helping the turtle). Why might this turtle need help? (other animals might steal the eggs, people can learn about turtles).
• Ask children: Have you ever helped an animal? (answers will vary).
• Say: There are many ways people can help animals. Can you name some of them? (take care of animals that are sick, bring animals to a shelter, save baby animals).

Guided Practice

• Guide children through the next four slides, showing them different ways that people can help animals. Always have the children describe how the people in the pictures are helping animals and why the animals need help.

Apply

• Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask children to talk about how they can tell whether the animals they see on screen need help and help the children learn more about how people help animals. After the second game, have them discuss how they new what would help the different animals they saw on screen.

Close

• Ask children: How would you like to help animals? Explain.
• Summarize for children that there are many ways we can help animals. We can protect areas that animals live in the wild. Encourage children to think about why it is important to help animals.
