Content Objectives

Students will:

• Learn about scientists.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about scientists and what they do.
• Explore and apply the concept of experimentation and the various fields of science.

Language Objectives

Students will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of what scientists do.
• Orally use words that describe the things that scientists study and what they use to study them.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about the different types of scientists and the process of experimentation.
• Use key concept words [technology, scientist, microscope, telescope, test tube, outer space, experiment, observation, invention].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about scientists:
• What types of scientists there are.
• What kinds of things scientists use and study.
• The difference between observation, experimentation and discovery.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do scientists do? (study our world so we can learn more about them). What are some types of scientists? (biologist, chemist, astronomer, etc.)
• Ask students: What are some tools scientists use? (microscope, telescope, test tube, etc.)
• Say: Scientists are very important because they help to advance our knowledge. How do scientists study things? (They use the steps of observation, experimentation and invention.)

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next four slides showing them various tools scientists use. Always have the student identify what kind of scientists would use each tool and what each tool does.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students what personal interest they have in science. After the second game, encourage them to share stories they have heard about scientific facts, experiments or inventions.

Close

• Ask students: Which kind of scientists would you most like to be? Why?
• Summarize for students that scientists have made many important discoveries such as cures for diseases. Encourage them to think about discoveries that they would like to make if they were a scientist.
