Explain Write the following on the board: On a sunny May morning, Mr. Rojas was searching for Mrs. Wilson’s missing cat, Boots, in the park near Mrs. Wilson’s house. Mr. Rojas got to the picnic area. He shouted, “Boots, stop chasing squirrels! Come home with me right now!” Read the paragraph aloud with the students. Tell them that they will identify the setting and plot in the paragraph.

Guided Practice Ask, Where and when does this story happen? (in a park on a sunny May morning) What happens in the story? (Mr. Rojas finds a lost cat.)

Practice Have students recall a story they have recently read. Ask them to write on the board the plot and setting.
