Artists at Work

Content Objectives

Students will:

• Access prior knowledge and build background about the significance of art.

• Demonstrate an understanding of art.
• Orally use words that describe the different types of art.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about expressions and artists.
• Use key concept words [art, drawing, painting, artist; sculpting, expression].

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about art:
• What is art.
• What are the different types of art.
• Who performs art.
• The purpose of art.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do you see in this photo? (clouds, mountains, trees, grass, flowers, house, sky, etc.) How was this photo created? (painted with a paintbrush).
• Ask students: Why do you think the artist painted this photo? (answers will vary).
• Say: Art is an activity by which one creates a work that has beauty or a special meaning. Art can express feelings, show a thought or capture a scene. There are many different forms of art. People also have different meanings about what the art is trying to say. What kind of art do you do in school? (painting, drawing, etc).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next three slides, showing them the different types of art and various artists. Always have the students describe what the art is trying to show and how each type differs.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students to talk about what is needed to create different kinds of art. After the second game, ask students to discuss whether they would like to be an artist.

Close

• Ask students: Why are artists important?
• Summarize for students that artists are important because they show different thoughts and expressions in many different ways. Art is interpreted differently by each person yet it speaks to everyone like a universal language because everyone is able to understand it. Encourage them to think about what other forms of expression are considered art.
