Going to the Library

Content Objectives

Students will:

• Learn about libraries.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about the significance of libraries.
• Explore and apply the concept of organizing information.

Students will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of libraries.
• Orally use words that describe the purpose of libraries.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about what is found inside a library.
• Use key concept words [library, information, organize; Dewey Decimal System].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about libraries:
• What is a library.
• What is found inside a library.
• How does a library work.
• The purpose of a library.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do you see in this photo? (a big building with trees in grass). Do you know what building that is? (answers will vary).
• Ask students: Guess how many books are in that building. (answers will vary).
• Say: This is the largest library in the world! It is called the Library of Congress and is located in Washington, D.C. A library is a collection of books, magazines, and newspapers. Today many libraries also have videos. We can borrow books from the library or we can read them right there. Most people use the library for research. What else can you do at the library? (use the computer, watch videos, write, etc.).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next four slides, showing them the different things found in a library. Always have the students discuss whether or not they have used these things.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students to talk about which of these things are good sources for finding articles. After the second game, have them discuss other things that you can't do in a library.

Close

• Ask students: Do you like going to the library? Explain.
• Summarize for students that many people like going to the library because it is a place where they can get work done. Libraries are quiet so that people can concentrate, read, write, and study. Encourage them to think about who probably uses the library the most.
