• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about community workers.

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that children are going to learn about a community:
• What a community is.
• People who work in a community.
• Words we use to compare.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask children: What do you see in this picture? (a town).
• Ask children: Do you live in a town? (yes or no) If you don't live in a town, where do you live? (a city, a suburb, a rural area, a farm).
• Say: Today we are going to learn about communities. Communities are places that people live. Sometimes communities have supermarkets, stores, and centers. What is found in your community? (answers will vary).

Guided Practice

• Guide children through the next three slides, showing them that a community is a place you are a part of. Always have the children describe what they would like to have in their community.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask children to talk about how people help in a community. After the second game, have them discuss how big or small things are. Have children find things that are small, smaller, and smallest.

• Ask children: What is your favorite place in your community? Explain.
• Say: All people need to help in a community. Think about how you can help.
