6th Grade, Research and Inquiry Activities
1. Connect to this link: http://www.smithsonianeducation.org/idealabs/collecting/index.html.
2. Click on Enter Collecting, then About Collecting, and then Why Collect? Read the text on the screen, and make sure you select Read More each time it appears at the bottom of the page.
3. Click on About Collecting again, and then Starting Your Own Collection. Click on and read about each topic you see on the left menu bar.
4. Click on Amazing Collections and research the three collections listed: Rocks & Minerals, Stamps, and Coins. Read about each collection by clicking the links on on the left-hand side of the screen.
5. Name three subjects that interest you. For each subject, name something related to it that you might be able to collect. (If you are having trouble coming up with ideas, the Web site offers some suggestions that may appeal to you.) For each of the these three items, write about how and where you might find the items--and estimate how much they might cost. In addition, list the different ways in which you might have to care for the items once you have started collecting them, and how and where you would display them.
6. Choose one of your items and start a collection!
