Explain Write this passage on the board: Sara’s recipe for fruit salad is a lot like her friend Jason’s. Both recipes call for melons and oranges. They both call for grapes. However, Sara puts raisins in her salad. Jason puts in blueberries. Read the sentences with students. Tell them that they will compare and contrast the two recipes.
Guided Practice Draw a Venn diagram and label one circle Sara’s Recipe and the other Jason’s Recipe. As you fill in the overlapping section, ask, How are the two recipes alike? (They both have melons, oranges, and grapes.) Then ask, How are they different? (Sara’s recipe calls for raisins; Jason’s recipe calls for blueberries.)
Practice Have pairs of students draw a Venn diagram. Ask them to label the circles with their names. Then have students use the Venn diagram to show what fruits they would like to put in a fruit salad. Remind them that matching items are placed in the overlapping section.
