Objectives
• Students will use the Internet to research whales.
• Students will work in a group to create a poster about a specific type of whale.
• Students will present their poster to the class.
Description
This Web site is maintained by the National Parks Conservation Commission. It provides
information about different animals found in North American oceans and rivers. It also features links to
more information about the parks where the animals are found and protected.
Suggested Activities
• Students can click on and research other sea life, such as the American Alligator, American Crocodile, Dolphin, Giant Pacific Octopus, Manatee, Sea Otter, Sea Turtle, Shark, or Steller Sea Lion. They can work together to create an aquarium on butcher paper by drawing each animal and writing a caption or each.
• At the bottom of each animal's page, students can choose and click on information about different parks
where the animals are found.
• Students can click on Make a Difference in the left menu bar to read how they can help sea life. Students can take notes and report back to the class what they learned.
Level Activities
• Have students connect to http://www.acsonline.org/factpack/index.html. Here, they can click on and research other kinds of whales, including the Beluga, Fin, Gray, Right, Pilot, and Pygmy. Have students:
select animals from the site to add to the aquarium they drew.
create a poster comparing and contrasting whales with dolphins and porpoises, based on the information available on the Web site.
select up to 12 different species of whales and then draw a map of the world, indicating where each species they selected may be found.
