Fairy Tales

Content Objectives

Students will:

• Learn about the concept of fairy tales.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about examples of fairy tales from different cultures.
• Explore and apply the concept of fairy tales.

Students will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of fairy tales.
• Orally use words that describe characteristics of fairy tales.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about terms that describe fairy tales from around the world.
• Use key concept words [despair, dragon, hero, fire, magical; fantasy, enchantment, unlikely, peculiar, fairy tale].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about:
• Fairy tales.
• Characteristics of fairy tales.
• Examples of fairy tales from around the world.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do you see in this picture? (a dragon).
• Ask students: Tell a story about this dragon. (answers will vary).
• Say: In this activity, we're going to learn about fairy tales and examples of fairy tales from around the world. What is your favorite fairy tale? (answers will vary).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next two slides, showing them different fairy tales. Always have the students discuss the characters.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students to talk about characters that they know from fairy tales. After the second game, have them discuss magical things that they could imagine might happen in a fairy tale.

Close

• Ask students: What magic powers would you like to have?
• Summarize for students that fairy tales are told throughout the world. Encourage them to think about what lessons fairy tales teach us.
