Poetry

3rd Grade, Research and Inquiry Activities

1. Connect to http://adifferentplace.org/bugs.htm.

2. Scroll down to read the two poems about caterpillars. Do you like them? Which one do you like better? Why?

3. Fold a blank piece of paper in half. On one side of the paper, draw a picture of what happens in the first poem. On the other side of the paper, draw a picture of what happens in the second poem.

4. The main idea of the first poem is the hope that the caterpillar will be safe and will continue to grow. At the top of the picture you drew about this poem, write the title "Be Safe, Caterpillar."

5. What is the main idea of the second poem? Read the second poem again. Think carefully about what it is about. Write a title for your second picture that describes the poem's main idea. Make sure that the title you give your picture describes the poem more than the title it already has.
