Spelling Bee

Objectives

• Students will use the Internet to do research and inquiry on the National Spelling Bee.
• Students will find out more about the competitors in the National Spelling Bee.
• Students will think about what hobbies help make people better spellers.
• Students will pretend they are going to be in the National Spelling Bee and write a short paragraph about themselves, including their hobbies.

Description

This site is the official Web site for the National Spelling Bee. It includes information for competitors, information about competitors, and history of the Spelling Bee.

Suggested Activities

• Have students go back to the Web site, click on the Bee on the upper left• hand corner of the Web Page, and then click on Carolyn's Corner . Students can read through the archives of Carolyn's tips to find out how people prepare for a Spelling Bee. Some weeks will even include tips by other students describing what they do to study. Have students compile their own books of tips for how to become better spellers.

Level Activities

• Students can click on http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/spelling.htm to read more about becoming a better speller. Have sudents:
scroll down to the quizzes at the bottom of the page. Have them take a quiz and print out their results.
click on Here under the Working on Your Spelling section to see a list of commonly misspelled words. Using the words, students can create a spelling quiz to give to a partner. Have students work in pairs to administer and grade one another's quizzes.
open the PowerPoint presentation in the box at the top of the Web page to go to a learn more about spelling. If possible, have students view the presentation. After reading all of the material on the Web site, and using their own knowledge about spelling, ask students to use presentation software to put together their own presentation on spelling for the class.
