Limericks

1. Connect to http://pbskids.org/arthur/games/poetry/limerick.html.

2. Read the information about limericks and then read the sample limerick by Sue Ellen. Do you like it? Why or why not? Do you think that the poem is funny?

3. Reread the poem. This time, tap your finger along with the rhythm of the poem. Can you hear the rhythm? It sounds like "da DUM da da DUM da da DUM."

4. How many beats are in each line? On a separate piece of paper, number from one to five and record how many beats are in each line.

5. Compare your answers with those of your classmates. With your teacher, read the poem as a class and tap your finger to the poem’s rhythm.
