• Learn about the concept of exploring space.• Access prior knowledge and build background about what has been discovered in outer space.
• Explore and apply the concept of what remains to be explored in outer space and how this might be accomplished.

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of exploring space.• Orally use words that describe outer space and how we have discovered different things in it.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about the future of space exploration.
• Use key concept words [space, NASA, satellite, orbit, astronaut].
Other
Explain
• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.• Explain that students are going to learn about space:
• What exists in outer space.
• How space exploration began.
• What humans have sent into outer space.
• The future of space exploration.
Model
• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: Do you know what this picture shows? (The Northern Lights). How do you think they are formed? (They form when light from the sun collides with gases in the Earth's atmosphere above certain Northern parts of Earth).• Ask students: What else can we see in outer space from Earth? (The moon, stars, the sun).
• Say: We can't see everything in outer space from Earth. How could we get a better look at things in outer space? (By flying into outer space and exploring it).
Guided Practice
• Guide students through the next two slides, showing them that humans have been flying into outer space to explore it for many years now. Always have the students describe how astronauts can enter outer space and survive in it.Apply
• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.• After the first game, ask students to talk about what type of person would make a good astronaut. After the second game, have them discuss what is needed to survive in outer space. After the third game, have students discuss what astronauts have discovered while exploring outer space.

• Ask students: How has space exploration changed from the days when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon? Explain what you think we will discover in outer space some day.• Summarize for students that space exploration is expensive and dangerous yet it provides us with information about our planet and other planets. Encourage them to think about whether they would go to outer space.
