Making Friends

2nd Grade Oral Language Resources

Content Objectives

Children will:

• Learn about the concept of making friends.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about how to be a good friend.
• Explore and apply the concept of why we make friends.

Language Objectives

Children will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of making friends.
• Orally use words that describe how to be a good friend.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about why we make friends.
• Use key concept words [friends, playmate, partner, loyal, trust].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that children are going to learn about making friends:
• Why we like friends.
• How friends have fun with us.
• How friends help us.
• How to be a good friend.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask children: What are the children doing in this picture? (playing a game, playing in a playground). How can you tell they are friends? (playing together, happy).
• Ask children: What do you like to do with your friends? (answers will vary).
• Say: We have many different friends. We may have friends in our family, friends, in our class, and friends in our neighborhood. Where have you made your friends? (answers will vary).

Guided Practice

• Guide children through the next three slides, showing them the different things friends do with each other. Always have the children give an example of playing or working with their friends.

Apply

• Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask children to talk about activities they like to do alone and activities they like to do with friends. After the second game, have them discuss what makes a good friend.

Close

• Ask children: How can you be a good friend? Explain.
• Summarize for children that we make friends in many different places. Friends help us work, and learn, and play. Encourage children to think about their first friend.
