Content Objectives

Students will:

• Learn about the concept of helping our neighbors.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about different ways to help neighbors.

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of helping our neighbors.
• Orally use words that identify different ways to help neighbors.
• Extend oral vocabulary by discussing how to help neighbors and neighborhoods.
• Use key concept words [neighbors, neighborhood].

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about helping neighbors:
• Neighbors are the people that live close by in a neighborhood.
• It is important to get along with neighbors and to keep the neighborhood a safe, clean place.
• There are many ways to help neighbors.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do you see in this picture? (people waving to one another, people in their own yards).
• Ask students: What do you think the relationship between these two people is? (they are neighbors).
• Say: Neighbors are people who live very close to you. It's important to get along with your neighbors and to work together to care for your neighborhood. What kinds of things are in your neighborhood? (answers will vary).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next four slides, showing them different ways to help neighbors. Always have the students discuss how they help their neighbors.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students to discuss different ways to keep a neighborhood beautiful. After the second game, have them talk about their favorite neighbor.

Close

• Ask students: Why is it important for you to help your neighbors?
• Summarize for students that neighbors are the people we live next to. Neighborhoods can consist of parks, schools, and supermarkets. Encourage them to think about fun things they can do in their neighborhood.
