Putting On a Performance

3rd Grade Oral Language Resources

Content Objectives

Students will:

• Learn about the concept of putting on a performance.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about performing.
• Explore and apply the concept of putting on a performance.

Language Objectives

Students will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of putting on a performance.
• Orally use words that identify different types of performances and items used by performers.
• Extend oral vocabulary by imagining a performance of their own.
• Use key concept words [stage, actor, musical instrument, sing, perform, audience].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about putting on a performance:
• What it means to put on a performance.
• Different types of performances.
• Various tools used by performers. • Why it is important to practice for a performance.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do you see in the photograph? What is this student doing? (playing the violin).
• Ask students: Where does this girl play the violin? (she plays at school, in music class, she plays in front of an audience).
• Say: When you use your talents by yourself, you are practicing. When you show your talents to a group of people called an audience, you are performing. What are some different ways to perform? (act, sing, play an instrument, dance, put on a play, and so forth).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next four slides, showing them that there are many different ways to perform. Always have the students discuss whether they would like to be a performer.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. • After the first game, ask students to discuss why they think it is important to practice for a performance. After the second game, have them discuss the kinds of performances they like to watch and the kinds of performances in which they like to participate.

Close

• Ask students: If the class decided to put on a performance for families and schoolmates, which of your talents would you like to show off in a performance?
• Summarize for students that there are many different types of performances. Performances usually involve a lot of different people working together. There are many people who work backstage. Encourage them to think about the different roles backstage.
