Content Objectives
Students will:
• Learn about electricity.• Access prior knowledge and build background about the significance of electricity.
• Explore and apply the concept of electricity.
Language Objectives
Students will:
• Demonstrate an understanding of electricity.• Orally use words that describe the purpose of electricity.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about inventions.
• Use key concept words [electricity, invention; appliances, machines, bright].
Other
Explain
• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.• Explain that students are going to learn about bright ideas:
• What is electricity.
• What is the purpose of electricity.
• What are inventions.
• What are appliances.
• What is the significance of inventions and appliances.
Model
• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do you see in this photo? (lightning striking a city at night). How is electricity shown here? (the lightning).• Ask students: What is lightning? (Lightning is a flash of light in the sky caused by electricity moving between clouds or between a cloud and the ground).
• Say: Electricity is one of the basic forms of energy. Electricity has no weight, size, color, or odor. Thomas Edison was the inventor of many electrical appliances. Electricity can be produced by batteries. What do you use batteries for? (remote, CD player, toys, etc).
Guided Practice
• Guide students through the next three slides, showing them how electricity is used. Always have the students describe how the appliance or invention uses electricity.Apply
• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.• After the first game, ask students to talk about inventions that have replaced inventions. After the second game, have them discuss why it's a bright idea to save electricity.
Close
• Ask students: Would you like to be an inventor? Explain.• Summarize for students that bright ideas are clever ideas that do something better or have a good purpose. For instance, it is a bright idea to eat healthily and exercise. However bright also means that there is a lot of light. Electricity is the power that makes almost all inventions and appliances work. Encourage them to think about future inventions that will replace the things we have today.
