Explain
• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.• Explain that students are going to learn about mysteries:
• What is a detective.
• What tools do detectives need.
• How to solve a mystery.
Model
• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do you see in this photo? (a detective looking through a magnifying glass) Why is the detective looking through a magnifying glass? (to closely view things).• Ask students: When have you used a magnifying glass? (answers will vary).
• Say: A mystery is something that is not or cannot be known, explained, or understood. A detective is a person whose work is finding information to solve a mystery. What other jobs involve finding information about crimes in order to solve them? (a police officer).
Guided Practice
• Guide students through the next three slides, showing them how to be a good detective and gather information. Always have the students describe how this information might help to solve a mystery.Apply
• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.• After the first game, ask students to retrace their steps to make sure they know what happened to the scarf. After the second game, have them discuss whether UFOs exist.
Close
• Ask students: Why is solving mysteries important? Explain.• Summarize for students that solving mysteries can be tricky. Sometimes it takes a long time to gather information. However, once mysteries are solved, we learn something we previously didn't know about. Encourage them to think about how much time they would spend trying to solve a mystery.
