Camping Out

Content Objectives

Students will:

• Access prior knowledge and build background about camping out.

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of camping out.
• Orally use words that describe camping out.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about terms that describe the experience of camping out.
• Use key concept words [thermos, fishing, camping, tent, mountains, hiking; navigate, scenery, nature].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about:
• Camping out.
• Characteristics of camping out.
• Things you need to take with you when camping out.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What are these people doing? (pitching a tent for camping).
• Ask students: What would you do when you go camping? (light a campfire, pitch a tent, roast marshmallows, tell ghost stories).
• Say: In this activity, we're going to learn about camping out. Where would you go camping? (outdoors, front lawn, in the woods).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next two slides, showing them the experience of camping out. Always have the students describe how to be safe when camping.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students to talk about what they would take with them on a camping trip. After the second game, have them discuss what sort of things they might see when camping out.

Close

• Ask students: Who would you camp out with?
• Summarize for students that camping out can be a lot of fun but there are certain things that you will need. Encourage them to think about some of the challenges when camping.
