• Explain that students will learn about school contests:
• What different types of school contests are and what happens in them.
• What is necessary to compete in a school contest.
• How it feels to compete in a school contest.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What do you see in this photo? (a student participating in a school contest). What type of school contest is this? (a spelling bee).
• Ask students: What are some other types of school contests? (sports competitions, art shows, science fairs).
• Say: There are many different types of school contests. Students compete in some school contests by themselves, and other types of school contests require teamwork. What else does competing in a school contest take? (Hard work, responsibility).

Guided Practice

• Guide the students through the next three slides, showing them different examples of school contests. Always have the student describe what is happening in the school contest and what it takes to compete in each contest.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students what different things are needed for a school contest. Have them describe where a school contest takes place, who participates in a competition, who determines the winner of a contest, what the winner of the contest earns, etc. After the second game, ask students which types of school contests they would like to enter, why they would like to enter each contest. After the third game, ask students what they would need to do in order to compete in different types of contests.

Close

• Ask students: What different types of school contests are there? Explain what happens in each contest and why you would like to compete in each contest.
• Summarize for students that school contests are a good way to show their abilities, make new friends, and represent their school. Encourage them to think about how they would feel representing their school.
