Description
This Web site is owned and maintained by CARA, the Center of Astrophysical Research in Antarctica. It is a student• friendly site containing information about exploring Antarctica, as well as links to other educational sites.
Suggested Activities
• Students can click on links under the Even more pictures heading on the Life at the South Pole Page to see photographs and read more about what life is like in Antarctica.
• Students can return to the first Web page they access, click on The CIA World Factbook, and scroll to Antarctica under the Select a Country or Location menu bar. Students can use this information and the information they learned on the CARA Web site to write a report on Antarctica.
Level Activities
• Have students connect to http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/antarctica/ and then:
click on the picture labeled Life in the Icebox to find out how some animals find food in Antarctica.
click on the picture labeled Unequaled Extremes to find out what the weather and geographical conditions on Antarctica are like. Have students search the Internet for information about the climate in which they live and compare this to what they learned about Antarctica.
click on the picture labeled Of Time Machines and Icebergs to find out why we study the ice that is in Antarctica. Then have them click on the picture labeled Looking for Life to find out about how studying life in Antarctica can help us learn more about our solar system. Have students discuss why studying the conditions in Antarctica can be so beneficial.
