5th Grade Research and Inquiry Resources

Objectives

• Students will use the Internet to read two versions of a Cinderella tale.
• Students will write summaries of the two tales.
• Students will compare and contrast the two tales and explain which one they prefer and why.

Description

This Web site is owned and maintained by SurLaLune Fairy Tales. It is a not• for• profit educational site that features illustrated fairy tales and their historical backgrounds.

Suggested Activities

• Have students connect to http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/cinderella/ and click on History in the left menu bar to read a historical perspective of the Cinderella stories.
• Students can click on Illustrations in the left menu bar to see different pictures based on the tales. Have them pay attention to how the clothing and style of the characters changes according to when and where the tale was written.

Level Activities

• Have students connect to http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/type0510a.html and read other Cinderella tales. Have students:
Approaching choose three tales to illustrate, showing the differences in the style and dress of the different tales' characters.
On level make a chart that compares and contrasts the costumes, characters, and settings of the Cinderella story that they are familiar with to at least two different versions from the site.
Beyond write their own original version of a Cinderella tale, using a setting of their choice.
