Objectives
• Students will use the Internet to do research and inquiry about poetry.
• Students will read at least three poems, find one to write about, and copy it down with a citation.
• Students will choose one poem and write a paragraph review telling why they did or did not like it.
Description
This Web site is a noncommercial site created by Birmingham Libraries in the United Kingdom. Funded by a grant, its purpose is to encourage children to explore literature on the Web and introduce them to books available in the library.
Suggested Activities
• Students can click on Is your favorite poet here? on the Web site and find out about the poet who wrote the poem that they critiqued. Depending on the poet chosen, students can read more about the poet, visit his or her Web site, read an interview with the poet, or fill out an online review of a poem and print it.
Level Activities
• Have students connect to http://www.poetspath.com/exhibits/magnificentrainbow.html and look through the different types of poetry that are presented on the Web page. Ask students to:
choose their favorite type of poetry and write their own poem in the same style.
make poetry books by writing and assembling different types of poems and accompanying
illustrations. You can display their books around the classroom for other students to read.
use the Internet to research published poets who have written in one of the poetry styles on
the Web site. Students can create their own poetry anthologies that include poetry of a specific style. Make sure students have accurately cited their poetry.
