Content Objectives

Students will:

• Learn about the concept of energy.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about energy, where it comes from, and how it is used.
• Explore and apply the concept of the different sources of energy and how they are used.

Language Objectives

Students will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of energy sources.
• Orally use words that name the sources, forms, media and users of energy.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about the difference between renewable and nonrenewable energy sources.
• Use key concept words [energy, power, machine, dam, electricity, hydro• electric, petroleum, coal, fossil fuels, resources, gasoline, batteries, renewable, nonrenewable].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that students are going to learn about energy:
• What is energy used for?
• What are some sources of energy?
• What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable energy sources?
• What are some ways energy is made useable?

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What is considered energy? (anything that gives people or machines the ability to move or act in some way.)
• Ask students: What are some sources of energy? (water, wind, oil, etc.)
• Say: We use energy everday of our lives. Energy comes from many different sources. What are some things that use energy? (cars, any electrical device, stoves, etc.).

Guided Practice

• Guide students through the next four slides showing them various energy sources. Always have the students discuss whether the energy source is renewable.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first game, ask students to name things around their house that use energy. After the second game, have them identify what kind of energy the things around their house use. After the third game encourage them to come up with ideas on how to save energy.

Close

• Ask students: Which are some ways you use renewable energy when you have fun?
• Summarize for students that energy is anything that can be turned into action or power. Some energy sources are water, wind, and oil but not all of them are renewable. Encourage them to think about some ways they use nonrenewable energy when they have fun.
