Explain
• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.• Explain that students are going to learn about rescue teams:
• What rescue teams do.
• What situations call for a rescue team.
• What are the differences between the various rescue teams.
• What tools and traits do rescue teams need to do their jobs.
Model
• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask students: What are rescue teams? (A group of workers who are trained to help people in certain dangerous situations.)• Ask students: What are some examples of rescue teams? (firefighters, lifeguards, paramedics). What are some reasons people may need a rescue team to help them? (fires, floods, car accidents, etc.).
• Say: Rescue teams are important because they provide help in times of emergencies. How do rescue teams do their jobs? (answers will vary).
Guided Practice
• Guide students through the next three slides showing them different rescue teams. Always have the students identify the name of the rescue team and explain what their jobs are.Apply
• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.• After the first game, ask students what personal interest they have in rescue teams. After the second game, encourage them to share experiences they have had with rescue workers.
Close
• Ask students: Name all the rescue teams you can think of and talk about how each one helps people. What type of rescue team would you like to be a part of? What would you need to know how to do in order to be a part of this team?• Summarize for students that rescue teams are made up of very brave people who risk their lives to help others. Encourage them to think about how they can help people during emergencies.
