Seasons

Kindergarten Oral Language Resources

Content Objectives

Children will:

• Learn about the concept of the four seasons.
• Access prior knowledge and build background about the names of the four seasons.
• Explore and apply the concept of how trees look different in different seasons.

Language Objectives

Children will:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of seasons.
• Orally use words that describe how the weather is different in different seasons.
• Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about how it looks outside in different seasons.
• Use key concept words [season, month].

Other

Explain

• Use the slideshow to review the key concept words.
• Explain that children are going to learn about seasons:
• Months of the year.
• The four seasons.
• How trees look in each season.

Model

• After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask children: What do you see in this picture? (a calendar).
• Ask children: How many months are there in a year? (Twelve).
• Say: Today we are going to learn that a year not only has twelve months, but a year also has four seasons. What season is it now? (name of current season).

Guided Practice

• Guide children through the next three slides, showing them that the weather changes each season. This makes trees look different each season. Always have the children describe how they should dress for each season.

Apply

• Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature.
• After the first two games, ask children to talk about activities they can do during each season of the year. After the third game, have them discuss things that are longer than their foot. Can the children find the longest item in the room?

Close

• Ask children: What is your favorite season? Explain.
• Say: There are four seasons in a year: fall, winter, spring, and summer. Each of the seasons is different. Think about your favorite activities in each season.
