Explain Write the following on the board: Tiffany and her sister Rose measured out the ingredients for their favorite recipe. They needed one more can of tomato sauce. “I’ll go to the store,” Rose said. “But I need to memorize my spelling list. Will you help me after dinner?” Tell students they will identify problems and discuss the actions taken to solve the problems.
Guided Practice Read the first three sentences aloud. Ask students to identify the first problem. Ask students to write this problem and its solution in a problem and solution chart. (Tiffany and Rose need tomato sauce. Rose says she will get it.)
Practice Read the rest of the paragraph. Ask students to identify the second problem and write it in the chart. (Rose needs to memorize her spelling list.) Ask, What step is taken to solve this problem? Have students write the answer on the chart. (Rose asks Tiffany to help her.)
